Taplings

Safety

Last updated: 24 October 2026

Taplings are designed to make sharing simple. This page explains what a Tapling can and can’t do, the protections built into Taplings and into your phone, and a few habits that help keep every tap safe. For how we handle personal data, see our Privacy Policy.

1. What a Tapling Can and Can’t Do

Each Tapling contains a small, passive NFC tag. It stores only the information written to it — such as a website link, a contact card, a short piece of text, or Wi-Fi details — and shares it with a phone held within a few centimetres.

  • It has no battery, GPS, camera, or microphone, and cannot track your location.
  • It cannot install apps or run code on a phone that taps it.
  • It can only be read at very close range, by a phone with NFC turned on.

2. How Taplings Protects You

  • No account required. The Taplings app works without sign-up or personal details.
  • Your data stays on your device. Saved records and tap history are stored locally using AES-256 encrypted storage and are never sent to Taplings or third parties.
  • We don’t keep what’s on your tag.Tags are written and read on your phone, and we don’t store their contents or who taps them. See our Privacy Policy for how Taplings tap links work.
  • Clear rules on use. Our Terms & Conditions prohibit using Taplings for unlawful, fraudulent, deceptive, or harmful purposes.

3. Protections Built Into Your Phone

Modern phones include their own safeguards for NFC, independent of Taplings:

  • iPhone — when a tag is read, iOS shows a notification describing it. Nothing opens until you choose to tap that notification.
  • Android — on most devices, tags are only read while the screen is on and the phone is unlocked.
  • Your browser — Safari and Chrome warn you before opening websites known to be deceptive or harmful.
  • You’re in control— NFC can be switched off at any time in your phone’s settings.

4. Tapping With Confidence

A few simple habits go a long way:

  • Tap Taplings from people you know. Treat an unfamiliar tag the way you would an unfamiliar QR code.
  • Check before you open. Look at the link or details your phone shows before continuing.
  • Protect sensitive information.Never enter passwords, payment details, or verification codes on a page you reached by tapping a tag you don’t recognise.
  • Be cautious with downloads. A legitimate tap rarely needs you to install an app or download a file.

5. Looking After Your Tapling

  • Think before you write.Anyone who taps your Tapling can see what’s on it, so avoid storing private details such as a home address on a Tapling you carry in public.
  • Keep it with you. Taplings use rewritable tags. If yours has been out of your hands, tap it yourself to confirm it still opens what you expect, and rewrite it if not.
  • For younger collectors. We recommend a parent or guardian helps choose what is written to a child’s Tapling.
